Trey - thriller analysis

Thriller opening one:

Title: The Usual Suspects
Duration: 2 minutes 50 seconds

Editing and Mise En Scene Analysis:

There is a black screen with a title of the location in font that appears suitable for a Police case study which foreshadows a crime scene. It is then cut to a whole matchbox being set alight which signifies fire ending everything and as soon as it is lit is thrown onto fuel of a kind. Character one is sitting in a low lit warehouse with a sinister fire looming in the background which chills the audience.

The fire he lit is put out by the urine of character two which shows  a sense of indifference which radiates off of character two who is dressed in a 1930s mob style clothing which makes the audience assume that he is a bad guy. He slowly walks towards character one and in a low voice ask how he is doing? At first this tells us that they may be working together which puts our fears at rest but then the story twists as character two asks character one if he is ready and withdraws a pistol.

The camera never captures character two's face which creates an enigma and thus a feeling of mystery which makes the audience curious and makes them want to watch.

Sound analysis:

At first the only sound is of fire igniting which goes out instantaneously, this foreshadows suspense and ending. We then hear water leaking from a pipe showing us that the location isn't maintained and dingy. As the fire is put out we hear sustained violin notes which creates suspense as character two walks towards character one. We then hear a Cello which adds low notes which are a complete contrast to the violin which further the suspense with the audience.

At the end of the clip we hear a sound bridge (two gun shots) as we cut to the outside of a boat which creates suspense and tension as we hear character one being shot by character two.

The voice of character one is staccato and high pitched which shows he is in a great deal of pain which tells the audience that he has been involved with some form of violence or action. Character two's voice is deep in tone and is pianissimo which makes us think he has the power and is under control. His voice is also legato which tells us that he hasn't experienced any pain and gives the assumption that he is the boss.

At the end of the intro we hear sirens after the shooting which creates suspense in the viewer.

  1. Trey - you are tending to describe rather than analyse. You are reaching the correct conclusions. However, you need to say how it is that you reaching these - what is it about the way sound, camera, editing and miss en scene are constructed?

  2. This would get you top level one. If you analyse and use screen grabs, you can easily improve on this. Ok,
